Chicago flights from London can take approximately eight hours from start to finish, and that’s without considering delays, stop-overs or the issues at different airports. If you’re travelling with young children then this travel time can seem daunting.
Don’t let the visions of screaming children and exhaustion stop you from visiting the windy city. Chicago is well worth every second of travel time from London. Instead prepare yourself for any eventuality well in advance so the trip becomes a part of the holiday.
If you are travelling with an infant then contact the airline before hand to arrange for a special infant sleeper carrier. Some airlines also offer infant packs that include those extras you may have forgotten such as baby wipes or nappies. Ask them to ensure that they have one of these packs to hand just in case.
One of the advantages of travelling with an infant is that they are more likely to snooze their way through the experience. Although nappy changing can be something of an adventure in itself, the journey should be no less uncomfortable than when you travelled alone before.
If your child has ear problems, however, it is advisable to speak to your doctor before you leave. Perhaps they can prescribe some medication or a form of relief in case the changes in air pressure cause the child pain. This is especially true of older children.
Between the ages of three and five, young children may struggle to equalise the air pressure themselves. This can cause anything from mild discomfort to extreme pain so it is a good idea to get GP advice and to practise basic pressurisation techniques with your child. You don’t want your Chicago flights to be an eight-hour endurance test of tears and trauma.
In the weeks leading up to your departure spend some time showing them how to ’swallow’ air in order to equalise their ears. Describe to them how the ear clicks when done correctly. Reward them when they get it right. If you do this often enough then they are less likely to panic if their ears start hurting on the plane and more likely to do what you tell them.
Another potential issue facing parents of older children, of course, is boredom. Little ones really don’t like to sit still for long periods of time, even if there are plenty of movies on the screen. Pack lots of easily accessible entertainment. Some of the best ones are mini-puzzles, drawing books with pencils, new toys that take up little room but have plenty of bells and whistles and new books.
Whip out these new toys and ideas at regular intervals so that they never quite reach the point of frustrated boredom. Turn the entire experience into an adventure. Have them guess as to what the next thing in the toy bag might be. Reward them for good behaviour and offer plenty of cuddles to comfort them. Flying may seem like second nature to you but to a child it can be a little intimidating.
Distraction, entertainment and preparation are the key words to remember as you embark on your Chicago flights. You never know, you may arrive on the other side refreshed and relaxed.
